How to Send Any File to Your Kindle

Send to Kindle is a free service from Amazon that transfers documents from your computer or phone to your Kindle library. Once a file is sent, it syncs across your registered Kindle devices and the Kindle apps, so you can pick up reading anywhere you are signed in to the same account.

Supported formats include PDF, DOC and DOCX, TXT, RTF, EPUB, and common image files such as JPEG, PNG, GIF, and BMP. Amazon converts most of these into a Kindle-friendly format automatically. There is a per-file size limit (currently 200 MB), so very large files may need to be compressed or split before sending.

Every Kindle account has a unique Send to Kindle email address that ends in kindle.com. To find it, sign in to your Amazon account, open the Devices settings under your content and devices page, select your device, and look for its dedicated email. You can rename the part before the address to make it easier to remember.

To send a document, open your normal email program, attach the file, and send it to that Kindle address. You do not need a subject line or message body. For security, Amazon only accepts files sent from an approved email. Add your own email to the approved senders list in your account settings first, or the file will be rejected.

Within a few minutes the document appears in your Kindle library and downloads to your device when it is connected to Wi-Fi. If it does not arrive, check that the sending address is approved and that the attachment is a supported format under the size limit.

PDFs are one of the most common files people want on their Kindle. You can email a PDF using the Send to Kindle address described above, and Amazon will deliver it as is or convert it. To have Amazon reflow the PDF into adjustable Kindle text, type the word Convert in the email subject line before sending.

Keep in mind that a converted PDF may lose some of its original layout, which matters for documents with complex tables, columns, or figures. If preserving the exact look is important, send the PDF without converting and use the built-in zoom and pan controls to read it. For text-heavy PDFs, converting usually gives a more comfortable reading experience with adjustable font size.

Amazon offers a free Send to Kindle desktop app for Windows and Mac. After installing it and signing in, you can drag files onto the app window or right-click a document and choose Send to Kindle. This is often faster than email when you have several files to transfer at once.

There is also a Send to Kindle option built into the Kindle mobile app, letting you share documents directly from your phone or tablet. On the web, the Send to Kindle page in your browser lets you upload files and choose which device or library they go to. All of these routes use the same account, so your documents stay in sync no matter which one you pick.

If a file never shows up, the most frequent cause is that the sending email is not on your approved senders list. Open your content and devices settings, find the personal document settings, and add the exact address you send from. Files from unapproved addresses are silently blocked to prevent spam.

Other issues include unsupported file types, attachments over the size limit, and a device that is offline. Make sure the Kindle is connected to Wi-Fi and that syncing is enabled, then manually trigger a sync from the device menu. If a document arrives but looks wrong, try resending it with the Convert option, or use the desktop app which handles formatting reliably.
