How to Use Libby with Your Kindle

To read Libby books on a Kindle, you need three things: a Kindle device or the Kindle app, an Amazon account, and a library card from a participating library. The Libby app itself is used to browse and borrow, while the actual reading happens inside your Kindle ecosystem.

Keep in mind that the send-to-Kindle feature is currently available mainly in the United States. If your library is located elsewhere, you may not see the Kindle option, and you will read directly in the Libby app instead. Check your library card status first, because an expired card will block borrowing.

Install Libby from your app store, then open it and tap the option to find your library. You can search by library name or let the app locate nearby branches. When you find yours, add your kindle library card by entering the card number and PIN provided by your library.

Once your card is verified, you gain access to the full catalog of available ebooks and audiobooks. You can hold titles that are currently checked out, and Libby will notify you when they become available. A single card often unlocks thousands of titles at no cost.

Find a book you want, then tap Borrow to check it out. After borrowing, open the title from your Shelf and look for the Read With option. If Kindle is supported in your region, select it to begin the libby to kindle transfer.

You will be redirected to an Amazon page in your browser. Sign in to your Amazon account, choose the Kindle device or app where you want the book delivered, then confirm. The next time your Kindle connects to Wi-Fi, the borrowed title will download automatically and appear in your library.

Library loans have a set borrowing period, and the length depends on your library. When the loan ends, the ebook simply stops opening on your Kindle, so there are no late fees to worry about. The title may still show as a placeholder until you remove it.

You can return a book early through the Libby app if you finish before the due date, which frees it up for the next reader. To clear a returned title from your Kindle, go to your Amazon content library and delete it manually, since expired loans are not always removed on their own.

If a book does not appear on your Kindle, connect the device to Wi-Fi and sync manually from the settings menu. Titles that never arrive are often stuck because the wrong Kindle was selected during checkout, so verify the delivery destination on Amazon.

If you do not see the Read With Kindle option at all, your library likely does not offer Kindle delivery in your area. In that case, read the book inside the Libby app, which works offline once the title is downloaded to your phone or tablet.
